Batterygate: Apple is offering another three-digit million amount

The computer company Apple is ready to pay a further three-digit million amount to create the so-called “Batterygate” from the world. The agreement with 34 other US states should then finally bring the matter to an end. The legal battle is about the throttling of older iPhones, which Apple implemented some time ago. According to the company, the processor performance was somewhat blocked when the batteries in the devices no longer produced top performance in order to ensure a reasonable run time. Consumer advocates, however, presented the matter in such a way that the smartphones were slowed down in order to persuade users to buy a newer model.

In a class action lawsuit brought by customers, Apple had already sought an out-of-court settlement some time ago and was ready to distribute $ 500 million to the plaintiffs. A second lawsuit has now to be dealt with, which has been brought by the competent authorities in a number of US states. Here Apple is now ready to make a payment of another $ 113 million to bring the process to an end.

Information was hidden

The Arizona public prosecutor, who was in charge of the plaintiff’s trial, accused Apple of misleading practices designed to keep the iPhone business going. Consumers were also inadequately informed about the consequences of the iOS updates that came with the throttling - not because the company had withheld the facts, but because they were simply hidden in complicated technical details.

Apple continues to reject the allegations and reaffirms its own stance, according to which it was simply a matter of better matching energy consumption and battery performance. The settlement payments offered should therefore not be associated with an admission of guilt.
