Google’s Satellite SOS Feature Rolling Out to Pixel 9 Series
Google’s new Satellite SOS feature is officially rolling out to the Pixel 9 series. This was first announced when the phones were unveiled. Currently, the feature is only available in the US, and users can access it for free during the first two years. The cost after this period is still unclear.
Setting Up Satellite SOS on Your Pixel 9
To use Satellite SOS, ensure that Google Messages is set as the default messaging app on your Pixel 9. Once you receive a notification that the service is live, navigate to Settings > Safety & emergency > Satellite SOS to access more details and view a demo of how it works.
How Satellite SOS Works in an Emergency
Before contacting emergency services via Satellite SOS, you’ll be prompted to answer a few questions about your situation. This step helps ensure you receive the most appropriate assistance for your specific emergency.
Information Shared During an Emergency
When using Satellite SOS, your phone will share your name, email, phone number, location, device details, and emergency contact information with emergency services and satellite service providers. Google has partnered with Skylo to manage the backend services, while Garmin is responsible for the emergency response.
