Samsung Galaxy S21: First photo confirms new design & cameras

Samsung will not officially present the new Galaxy S21 series for the first time until mid-January, but now the leaks in the upcoming series of high-end smartphones are gradually increasing. A first photo appeared today that not only shows the basics of the camera equipment, but also confirms the design. The YouTuber Sakitech published a photo on Twitter and on his video channel in which the Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus and the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra can be seen side by side. The photo only shows the device from behind, but confirms that Samsung intends to redesign the design of the camera module in a very unconventional way. The cover around the camera module is practically led to the edge of the case and goes almost seamlessly into the frame of the smartphone. With the S21 +, three cameras are arranged one above the other on the back, but the LED flash next to the collection of image sensors. The S21 Ultra has four cameras in a much larger array with the flash also in the cover.

Samsung is again relying on cameras as a unique selling point

As far as the capabilities of the cameras are concerned, the Galaxy S21 + has two 12-megapixel sensors as the main and ultra-wide-angle camera and a telephoto camera with 64 megapixels. The same configuration should also be used in the Galaxy S21 base model, although the arrangement of the cameras is probably slightly different.

In the case of the Galaxy S21 Ultra, the sources speak of a main sensor with 108 megapixels of the Samsung HM3 type, which has phase detection autofocus. There is also an ultra-wide-angle camera with a Sony IMX563 sensor and 12 megapixel resolution and dual phase detection autofocus on board.

There are also two zoom cameras, each with 3 and 10 times magnification, which each work with 10 megapixels and probably use the same Samsung camera sensor with a pixel edge length of 1.22 micrometers. At least the more powerful zoom sensor gets a periscope optics again to lengthen the distance between the sensor and the optics.

What in the photo looks like a fifth camera sensor located on the top right is supposedly “only” the laser autofocus system built in in addition to the phase detection autofocus of the individual cameras.
